DIY Beach Memory Jar to Preserve Seashells and Souvenirs

Summer invites sunshine, warm evenings, and the simple pleasures of time spent outdoors. We trade heavy coats for shorts, swap boots for sandals, and savor ice cream, popsicles, and long dinners on the patio. These are the moments we want to remember — the feel of soft grass beneath our feet, sand between our toes, and laughter shared with friends and family. But how do we turn those moments into lasting, visible keepsakes?

Smartphones made it easy to capture moments, and most of us have hundreds of photos stored on our devices. Yet those images rarely get printed or displayed. If you want a tangible reminder of your trips instead of a forgotten folder in your phone, try a simple, beautiful craft: collect a small amount of sand from each beach you visit and display it at home.

Souvenirs often end up tucked away in boxes. A jar of beach sand is different: it’s small, displayable, and instantly transports you back to that place — the smell of the ocean, the sound of the surf, the memory of sun-warm skin and salty air.

A simple sand collection makes a meaningful, everyday reminder. At our house we keep bottles of sand from each trip on a shelf in the living room. Each jar is labeled, and together they form a colorful line-up of memories.

Over time we’ve gathered sand from many beaches. When you line the bottles up, the variety of colors and textures is striking — from pale, powdery white to golden and pink hues, even darker sands. The collection becomes like a miniature map of places you’ve loved.

How to make your own beach sand keepsakes:

  • Collect a small amount of sand in a clean container as you leave the beach. A disposable water bottle or zip-top bag works well. Note any local regulations — for example, collecting sand is prohibited in Hawaii.
  • Back home, transfer the sand into a clear glass bottle or jar using a funnel. Choose matching bottles for a uniform display, or mix styles for a more eclectic look.
  • Label each bottle with the location and date. You can tuck a small note inside the bottle, attach a tag to the neck, or place a label on the back.
  • Arrange the bottles on a shelf, mantel, or windowsill where they’ll catch the light and remind you of each trip.

We found our glass bottles at a local craft store (like Michael’s), but any clear container will do. If you prefer a creative twist, layer sands from different trips in the same bottle to create bands of color, or mix small shells and pebbles you collected along the way.

Aside from being decorative, this project is a gentle prompt to plan your next getaway. Each bottle reminds us of the next place we want to visit, and it keeps the excitement of travel alive between trips.
