Sew a cute, comfortable dress with this easy V neck dress pattern. Designed for lightweight fabric with a soft drape, this floral dress is a lovely choice for spring and summer, and it can be customized in length, sleeve style, and neckline depth to suit your taste.

V Neck Dress Pattern

If you enjoy sewing simple handmade clothing, this V neck dress pattern is a beautiful project to add to your wardrobe. The design is relaxed, easy to wear, and flattering without being complicated. It works especially well with light fabrics that move nicely, making it ideal for warm weather, casual outings, and comfortable everyday wear.

This dress was created with a simple V neckline method in mind. If you have already practiced sewing a V neckline, this project is a great way to use that skill in a finished garment. The pattern is available in sizes 6 to 16, but you can also draft your own version by using a loose-fitting dress from your closet as a guide. Trace the basic shape, adjust the length and sleeves as needed, then create the V neckline to match your preferred style.

This sewing pattern is intended for a casual V neck dress, but experienced sewists can easily adapt it into a more polished garment. You can change the fabric, adjust the length, refine the fit, or even create a more formal version depending on the occasion. The original dress includes 3/4 sleeves, which are practical for spring and still comfortable in summer. If you prefer a sleeveless dress or full-length sleeves, the pattern can be adjusted to match your personal style and the season.

For this V neck mini dress, rayon challis was used because it is lightweight, soft, and has a lovely drape. Other suitable fabrics include cotton voile, cotton lawn, and chambray. The dress is not made with a standard one-piece V neckline. Instead, the neckline is finished in two sections: one for the front and one for the back. This gives the dress a slightly different look while still keeping the clean shape of a V neck dress.

The 3/4 sleeves make this dress easy to wear during spring with a light jacket, while the airy fabric keeps it comfortable for summer. The fit is loose and relaxed, which makes it a great dress for hot days when you want something pretty but effortless. This version is sewn as a mini dress, but the length can be changed easily. Make it shorter, knee length, or midi length depending on what feels best for you.

The neckline on this dress is intentionally deep. It can be worn with a bandeau underneath, and the style may also be practical for nursing mothers. If you prefer more coverage, simply adjust the depth of the V before cutting your fabric.

V Neck Mini Dress

Materials:

  • 4 yards of lightweight fabric with a good drape, such as challis, cotton voile, cotton lawn, or chambray
  • Dress pattern available here in sizes 6 to 16
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Safety pin
  • Pressing iron

Directions:

Prepare the fabric

  • Access and print the pattern from here.
  • Place the pattern pieces on the fabric. Pin them in place or use fabric weights, then cut 1 front piece on the fold, 1 back piece on the fold, and 2 sleeve pieces on the fold.

Make the v neckline

  • Cut the neckline fabric and sew the V neck on the front panel of the dress as shown in this tutorial.
  • Place the front and back dress pieces right sides together. Match the shoulders, pin, and sew. Finish the seam allowances with a serger or a zigzag stitch.
  • To finish the back neckline, add a separate band after joining the front and back. Cut a strip of fabric the same width as the V neck strips. The length should match the back neckline, plus 1/2 inch on each end. Fold the strip in half and press. Open it, fold the long edges in by 1/4 inch, and press. Fold the short ends in by 1/4 inch and press. Place the dress wrong side up. Open the strip and pin it to the dress, with the right side of the strip facing the wrong side of the dress. Sew along the 1/4 inch fold. Flip the strip up, fold it down over the neckline, and pin the other side to the right side of the dress. Edge stitch as close to the folded edge as possible.

Sew the rest of the dress

  • Attach the sleeves to the dress with the right sides together. Sew, then finish the seam allowances with a serger or zigzag stitch. Hem the sleeves with a tiny hem as shown in this tutorial.
  • With the front and back right sides together, sew the side seams and sleeve seams. Finish the raw edges with a serger or zigzag stitch.
  • Hem the bottom of the dress using the same tiny hem method.
  • Try the dress on and decide where you want the waist cord to sit. It can sit at the natural waist or slightly below for a more relaxed fit.

Add the cord

  • Make the casing for the waist cord. Cut a strip 2 1/2 inches wide and as long as the full width of the dress around the front and back, minus 1/2 inch. Fold the long edges in by 1/4 inch and press. Position the casing on the dress where you want the cord to sit, starting with one end at the center front. Pin all the way around, then sew the casing to the dress around the waist.
  • Make the cord. Cut a fabric strip 1 inch wide and twice as long as the casing. Fold it in half lengthwise and press. Open it, fold each long edge toward the center crease, and press again. Sew along the open edge to close the cord. Knot the ends, attach a safety pin to one end, and thread the cord through the casing.

Your V neck dress is now ready to wear. Style it with a bandeau, a light jacket, or your favorite warm-weather accessories, and enjoy your handmade mini dress.
