This week, Mr. Garlic and I visited Flame Tree BBQ to explore the allergy-friendly options at one of Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s most popular quick-service restaurants.
Located on the right side of Discovery Island, along the walkway between Asia and DinoLand U.S.A., Flame Tree Barbecue is known for its smoky meats, large portions, and peaceful waterfront seating.

As two people who grew up in Memphis, also known as serious barbecue country, we were curious to see how Disney’s in-park barbecue compared. More importantly, we wanted to know how well Flame Tree BBQ handled gluten-free, dairy-free, and plant-based dining.
For this visit, we ordered a mix of allergy-friendly menu items, including gluten-free, dairy-free, and plant-based options, to get a better idea of what is safe, easy to order, and actually worth eating.
If you are visiting Walt Disney World with food allergies, dietary restrictions, or simply want to know what alternative menu options are available at Animal Kingdom, this Flame Tree BBQ review covers the atmosphere, ordering process, food, and final verdict.
Arrival, Atmosphere, (& some very bold Ducks):
Flame Tree BBQ is located on the right side of Discovery Island, just beyond the gift shops as you move toward the center of Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
The restaurant is easy to spot thanks to its colorful wooden sign, covered ordering counter, and carved bird details. It has the relaxed, open-air feel that works especially well in Animal Kingdom.

We used Mobile Order, so instead of waiting at the counter, we headed straight to the seating area. Honestly, the seating here is one of the best parts of the entire restaurant.
To the left of the ordering area, there is an ADA-compliant ramp leading to a shaded pavilion. There are also stairs that take you down into a winding garden filled with covered tables, greenery, and a view of the water.

We found a quiet corner beside a small water feature in the upper pavilion. Even though it was a very hot day, well over 90 degrees, the space felt comfortable enough thanks to shade, ceiling fans, and open airflow.
There were plenty of napkin and cutlery stations nearby, and the padded chairs were a welcome surprise. That might sound like a small detail, but in a theme park, comfortable seating can make a huge difference.
Although Flame Tree BBQ was busy, the dining area never felt cramped. We stayed for close to 90 minutes and never felt rushed, crowded, or overwhelmed by the foot traffic.

And then there were the birds.
There were ducks and other birds wandering throughout the seating area, clearly hoping for scraps. They moved between tables, quacked at guests, and seemed completely comfortable with the busy restaurant atmosphere.
One very bold duck even pecked at my leg. I did not mind, but it definitely made the meal more memorable. I also saw another guest gently pet a baby duck nearby.
There are signs asking guests not to feed the birds, and that rule is important. Still, these feathered visitors have clearly learned that Flame Tree BBQ is a reliable place to hang around.

Overall, Flame Tree BBQ has one of the most pleasant quick-service seating areas at Walt Disney World. It is shady, scenic, relaxed, and just lively enough thanks to the local wildlife.
It is the kind of place where you can actually sit, cool down, and enjoy a slower moment inside the park.

What’s on the Menu? (& How to Order Allergy-Friendly):
The Flame Tree Barbecue menu includes the classic barbecue items you would expect from a quick-service BBQ spot in Animal Kingdom.
You will usually find pulled pork, ribs, rotisserie chicken, and sides such as baked beans, coleslaw, fries, and a cornbread muffin. On our visit, there was also a specialty dessert, a Key Lime Pie Pop dipped in dark chocolate.
The menu also includes kids’ meals, non-alcoholic drinks, cocktails, and draft beer.
For the most current Flame Tree BBQ menu, check the My Disney Experience app before you order.

We chose to Mobile Order, which is usually the fastest and easiest option for us.
The My Disney Experience app includes a dedicated Allergy-Friendly menu tab. From there, you can filter by common allergens, including gluten/wheat, egg, fish/shellfish, peanut/tree nut, sesame, and soy.
There is also a separate Plant-Based section, clearly marked with the leaf symbol.

This setup makes it simple to browse the Flame Tree BBQ allergy-friendly menu by dietary need. So far, I have not had issues using Mobile Order for allergy-friendly meals at Disney.
That said, if you or someone in your party has a severe allergy, or if your specific allergen is not listed in the app, it is better to order in person at the counter.
Cast Members are usually very helpful, and many Disney quick-service restaurants can involve an on-site chef or allergy-trained team member when needed.

After we ordered and paid through the app, it took about 10 minutes for the “your order is ready” notification to arrive. The app assigned us a pickup window number, and our food was ready to go.
A quick note on the Disney Dining Plan:
Flame Tree BBQ does accept some Disney Dining Plans. A Quick Service credit is commonly accepted here, but it is always best to confirm in the app or ask a Cast Member, especially if you plan to order specialty items or alcoholic drinks.
Everything We Ordered (and What We Thought):
So, what did we eat at Flame Tree BBQ? In short, quite a bit.
Because this visit was focused on allergy-friendly dining at Animal Kingdom, I ordered a mix of gluten-free, dairy-free, and plant-based items to see what worked best.
Here is everything we tried:

Ribs, Chicken & Pulled Pork Sampler- $18.99
(Shellfish-free and sesame-free as-is / can be made gluten-free, egg-free, dairy-free, nut-free, and soy-free with modifications)
This sampler was a huge plate of food. For under $20, it included St. Louis ribs, bone-in marinated chicken, smoked pulled pork, baked beans, and coleslaw. It was easily enough for two people to share, especially if you are looking for a filling lunch inside Animal Kingdom.
Important allergy note: the coleslaw is made with malt vinegar from barley, so it is not suitable for guests with celiac disease or anyone who must strictly avoid gluten. I do not have celiac, but I do have an autoimmune condition that can react to gluten. I tried it and did not have a reaction, but you should always make the decision that is safest for your own body.

Here is how the meats tasted:
- The pulled pork was soft, tender, and mild. It was tasty on its own but much better with barbecue sauce.
- The roasted chicken had a dry rub that reminded me of blackened seasoning, with notes of paprika, garlic, and salt. The outside was a little dry, but the inside stayed moist.
- The ribs were tender, but they were also a bit under-seasoned for our taste.
Because we ordered the meal gluten-free, the barbecue sauce came on the side. The sauce was Ken’s Cannonball BBQ Sauce, which is gluten-free and vegan. It was slightly sweet, smoky, and tangy, and it helped add both moisture and flavor to the meats.

The sides were more hit-or-miss:
- Baked beans: These were our least favorite item of the meal. They tasted dry and overcooked, with a spicy but ketchup-heavy sauce that did not really work for us.
- Coleslaw (not gluten-free): This was a fairly standard Southern-style coleslaw. It was creamy, tangy, and crunchy.

Our Rating (BBQ Sampler): 6.5/10
The portion size is excellent, the plate can easily feed two people, and it can be made allergy-friendly with modifications. Just do not expect deeply seasoned Memphis-style barbecue.
Impossible Burnt Ends- $12.29
(Plant-based, dairy-free, egg-free, gluten-free with gluten-free sauce)

This dish divided the table. The Impossible Burnt Ends were served with fries and a vinegar-based slaw. We were expecting something closer to crisp, charred barbecue bites, but the texture and appearance were very different.
Instead, they looked and tasted more like thin-cut Impossible breakfast sausage patties with very mild seasoning.
The texture was soft and spongy. I did not completely dislike the flavor, especially with barbecue sauce, but Mr. Garlic was not a fan. Another nearby table compared it to canned dog food, which was harsh, but I understood where they were coming from.
The sides helped the dish overall:
- Fries: Thin, crisp, well-seasoned, and served in a generous portion.
- Dairy-free slaw: Light, crunchy, and vinegar-forward.
Our Rating (Impossible Burnt Ends Combo): Me: 4/10. Mr. Garlic: 0/10.
If you are plant-based and craving barbecue flavors, this may still be worth trying. Just know that the texture is not very similar to traditional burnt ends.
Allergy-Friendly Cookie- $4.29
(Gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, nut-free, soy-free)

If you have ordered an allergy-friendly cookie or brownie at Disney before, you may already recognize this type of treat from David’s Cookies.
This cookie was soft, thick, and about the size of my hand. It had a chewy texture, a gentle sweetness, and the kind of reliable consistency that makes it a safe dessert option.
For a mass-produced allergy-friendly treat, I genuinely enjoy these cookies and would order one again.
Our Rating (Allergy-Friendly Cookie): 8/10
A dependable allergy-friendly dessert and a solid choice.
The Rotten Apple (Cocktail)- $13.50
(Gluten-Free)
The Rotten Apple is a popular cocktail at Animal Kingdom. It is made with Angry Orchard hard cider, Fireball cinnamon whiskey, and gummy worms.

Unfortunately, I ordered it on an extremely hot day. By the time I walked back to our table, which took less than a minute, the ice had already melted and the drink tasted watered down.
I could not taste much cinnamon whiskey or gummy candy flavor. It mostly came across as diluted hard apple cider. The serving size was decent at 16 ounces, but the flavor was disappointing.
Our Rating (Rotten Apple Cocktail): 3/10
This was a miss for me, though it may be better if you drink it immediately.
A Few Quick Notes About Our Meal:
- No allergy markers were included on our food trays, which was unusual based on our previous Disney dining experiences.
- The portion sizes were huge. We could have shared one entrée and still been satisfied.
- My favorites: the pulled pork and the allergy-friendly cookie.

Final Thoughts: Worth It or Skip It?
Would we eat at Flame Tree BBQ again? Yes, we would.
This Animal Kingdom quick-service restaurant has several things going for it. The menu is easy to navigate, the portion sizes are generous, the seating area is one of the best in the park, and the allergy-friendly options are better than we expected.
Also, the ducks. Honestly, the ducks alone made the experience memorable.

On a future visit, I would probably stick with the pulled pork or try another meat-based option from the menu.
The Impossible Burnt Ends were not a win for us, but plant-based guests who enjoy meat alternatives may still want to try them. The allergy-friendly cookie, however, remains an easy yes.
So, is it a safe pick for allergy-friendly diners?
Mostly yes, with a few important caveats.
The Mobile Order system in the My Disney Experience app makes it easy to filter by allergy, including gluten, dairy, soy, egg, and nut restrictions. Plant-based items are also clearly marked.
However, if your allergy is severe or your specific restriction is not listed, it is worth speaking with a Cast Member or chef in person before ordering.
The only thing that gave me pause was that our food did not come with allergy markers, which is something we often see when ordering allergy-friendly meals at Disney. I personally did not have a reaction to anything we ordered, but every guest’s needs are different.
As always, use your best judgment, listen to your body, and when in doubt, speak to a Cast Member.

So, Who is Flame Tree BBQ perfect for?
- Meat lovers who want ribs, chicken, or pulled pork.
- Families or couples looking for a quiet, shady place to rest.
- Guests using eligible Disney Dining Plans.
- Anyone looking for large portions at theme park prices.
- Guests with dietary restrictions who want clearly labeled options.
- And, of course, duck enthusiasts.
Final verdict?
Is this the best barbecue we have ever had? As two people from Memphis, we have to say no.
But for theme park barbecue, Flame Tree BBQ is pretty solid. The outdoor seating is beautiful, the portions are generous, and the allergy-friendly options make it a helpful choice inside Animal Kingdom.
Our Overall Flame Tree BBQ Review Score: 6.5/10
Good portions, a beautiful setting, allergy-conscious ordering options, and decent theme park barbecue. Just do not expect hometown-level ribs, and you may want to skip the baked beans.
