Hello and welcome to the Grill Like A Mother podcast. I’m Taryn Solie, your host. In this opening episode I’ll share a bit about who I am, how I got into grilling and outdoor cooking, and what you can expect from future episodes.
I run a recipe site called Hot Pan Kitchen where I post gluten-free, paleo, and whole-food recipes for both the grill and the kitchen. I began experimenting with grilling several years ago, and the pastime grew into something more during the pandemic. Like many people, I was looking for ways to try new things, spend time outdoors, and create routines that felt grounding. Grilling and cooking outside became a practical, creative, and calming outlet.
When I first started, grilling felt intimidating. We use a two-burner Weber gas grill and a Traeger wood pellet grill, and I wasn’t confident about how to operate either one. I made plenty of mistakes—learning opportunities, really—and gradually learned techniques, temperatures, and timing that made grilling easier and more enjoyable. That learning curve is part of why I created this podcast: to help others move from uncertainty to confidence at the grill.
Camping has also shaped how I cook outdoors. I grew up spending time outside and was a Camp Fire girl as a child, and more recently my family and I rediscovered camping. My husband is an Eagle Scout who loves camping, and our twin eight-year-old boys are always ready for adventure, which makes camping a natural family activity. Cooking at a campsite requires creativity and adaptability because you don’t have all the conveniences of a home kitchen. That challenge led me to explore simple, reliable techniques for feeding a family outdoors.
The central theme of this podcast is feeding your family and friends through grilling and outdoor cooking. I created Grill Like A Mother to make outdoor cooking less intimidating and more fun, especially for women. The outdoor cooking and barbecue world tends to feel male-dominated, and I want to raise the profile of women who grill, cook over fire, and lead outdoor meals. While many guests and conversations will come from a female perspective, you’ll hear voices of all genders and backgrounds who love to cook outside.
Season 1 runs through spring and summer—prime grilling and camping months—and covers a wide array of topics. Expect episodes about cooking while camping, holiday meal ideas adapted for the grill, creative ways to bake on a barbecue, and practical step-by-step tips for common outdoor meals. Every couple of weeks I’ll also share what my family is currently grilling to give you easy dinner ideas you can adapt at home.
Across episodes you’ll find approachable tips, troubleshooting advice, and meal inspiration to get you comfortable cooking on a grill, over a live fire, or at a campsite. My goal is to share simple techniques you can use right away, whether you’re lighting a gas grill, working with wood pellets, or building a campfire. I’ll cover basics like managing heat, timing proteins and vegetables, and practical gear recommendations based on real use, without overwhelming technical detail.
If you have topic suggestions or questions for future episodes, please email me: Taryn (that’s t-a-r-y-n) at grill-like-a-mother dot com. I welcome ideas about recipes, camping cooking challenges, baking on a barbecue, or guests you’d like to hear from. Thank you for listening to this introduction. I’m excited to share recipes, tips, and stories that make outdoor cooking accessible and enjoyable. Until next time, keep grilling like a mother.
